English Tense and Aspect in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar: A Critical Appraisal and an Alternative
This book offers a critical examination of the standard description of tense
and aspect in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and suggests
a new approach to these categories within a systemic functional framework.
While SFL is developing very rapidly in its applications and in a number of
theoretical derivations, many of Halliday’s basic assumptions, as well as many
of his descriptive tools and conventions, have remained largely the same for
the last 25 years or so. There are really only minor revisions and alterations of
the grammatical foundation in the second and third editions of Halliday’s
original (1985a) contribution to linguistics An Introduction to Functional
Grammar (henceforth simply IFG, cf. Halliday (1994a) and Halliday and
Matthiessen (2004)).
